Access begins
with understanding.

MHL Investments provides brokerage access to private placements and other approved securities. Evaluate a recommendation within the client’s full portfolio, investment horizon, liquidity needs, and capacity for loss.

Brokerage services are nondiscretionary: the client makes the final purchase or sale decision. Ongoing portfolio management is a separate advisory service through an investment adviser.

Private does not mean protected. Private securities can be speculative, difficult to value, and impossible to sell when needed. An investor can lose the entire amount invested. Eligibility requirements do not establish that an investment is appropriate.

The alternative investment landscape

Different exposures.
Different considerations.

These are areas of focus across the MHL businesses, not a list of current offerings. The available investment, share class, access route, and required eligibility depend on the specific product.

01

Private equity

Exposure to privately held businesses through eligible investment structures.

Consider: Long holding periods, business failure, capital calls, and uncertain or unavailable exits.

02

Private credit

Lending strategies with differing borrowers, collateral, seniority, and repayment terms.

Consider: Default, loss severity, leverage, interest-rate changes, and limited secondary markets.

03

Private real estate

Property-based strategies across selected sectors, geographies, and ownership structures.

Consider: Vacancy, financing costs, property values, environmental issues, and illiquidity.

04

Real assets & infrastructure

Exposure tied to physical assets, operating projects, or essential services.

Consider: Project delays, regulatory changes, leverage, operating costs, and concentration.

05

Hedge & absolute-return strategies

Specialized investment approaches that may use derivatives, hedging, or short positions.

Consider: Manager risk, leverage, opaque exposures, counterparty risk, and losses despite the strategy name.

06

Structured investments

Investments with defined payoff formulas linked to specified assets or market measures.

Consider: Issuer credit, complex terms, capped returns, principal loss, and limited resale opportunities.

A category’s inclusion here does not mean that a particular security is currently available through MHL Investments. Some strategies are accessed through MHL TAMP’s advisory services.

Planning context matters

Consider the tax features.
Evaluate the investment.

Private investments may arise in client discussions involving real estate exchanges or other tax-sensitive planning. Evaluate the investment economics, risks, and client fit alongside any potential tax features.

Tax outcomes depend on the investor, the structure, and applicable law. Coordinate with qualified tax and legal professionals before acting; MHL does not provide tax or legal advice.

Tax benefits are not guaranteed and do not eliminate investment risk. No specific offering or tax outcome is being promoted on this website.

Questions worth asking

Clarity before a commitment.

Do all private investments require accredited investor status?
Requirements vary by offering. Some private investments require accredited investor or other eligibility status; registered alternative funds may have different requirements. The offering documents control, and eligibility alone does not establish fit.
How should we plan for restricted liquidity?
Review the actual exit and redemption terms. Some investments have no active market; others use notice periods, redemption windows, gates, or transfer restrictions. Evaluate the client’s liquid reserves and known commitments outside restricted investments.
How is MHL Investments compensated?
Brokerage compensation may include commissions and other product-related payments. Costs and incentives differ by investment and may create conflicts of interest. Review the Form CRS and the specific offering documents before making a recommendation.
Who manages an alternative investment sleeve?
Discretionary sleeve management is an advisory service. MHL TAMP manages assigned strategies under the applicable advisory agreements; MHL Investments acts in the separate brokerage capacity described here.
